American Idol's top 3 performance show topped Wednesday ratings.

"Modern Family" and "Cougar Town" dip; canceled spinoff "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior" hits low.

The Fox juggernaut averaged 23 million total viewers and a 7.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary. Idol, up just a tad from last week, easily gave Fox the Wednesday win in both categories. Compared to the same telecast last season, Idol grew 7 percent in the 18-49 demo and 23 percent in viewers (23 million vs. 18.7 million).
As finales near for ABC's comedies, The Middle (7.7 million, 2.4) was the only one to improve. Modern Family (10.1 million, 4.0), Cougar Town (5.4 million, 2.0) and back-to-back episodes of Happy Endings (3.4 million, 1.4) sinking.
CBS' season finale of Criminal Minds (12.5 million, 3.3) grew 6 percent and was the top-rated scripted program, while canceled spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (8.4 million, 2.0) hit a low. ABC and CBS tied for second in the demo, averaging a 2.2 rating.
NBC's Minute to Win It (3.5 million, 1.0) rose 11 percent and the Law & Order: SVU season finale (8.7 million, 2.8), up 4 percent from last season's closer and the highest-rated program in its time slot.
The finale of America's Next Top Model averaged 1.8 million and a 0.8.
